Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)

What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)?

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) causes deep, inflamed, and painful lumps under the skin typically in the armpits and groin.  As it progresses it can cause tunnels under the skin and permanent scars.  HS can go undetected for a long period of time because of misdiagnosis or mistakenly taking it for pimples or acne cysts.  These lumps can break open and heal multiple times releasing an offensive smell.

How to recognize Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)?

HS would look like an acne breakout, however in areas of the body that acne isn’t as common and won’t heal.  These areas include the armpit and groin.

How did you get Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)?

Currently, there is no known exact cause for HS but genetics and other environmental conditions are factors that play a role.  HS is a systemic inflammatory condition where the skin abnormally plugs up hair follicles which then rupture and intense inflammation is produced.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Treatments

Typical medical treatments for HS include topical and systemic medications, surgery, injections, or some combination of all these.  Treatment recommendations for HS do vary for each case, and a consultation with your dermatologist is recommended.  For proper treatment regular follow-up visits and comprehensive care are essential.
